Addiction specialist medical practitioners provide assistance to people with opiate addiction and complex medical and/or psychiatric presentations with withdrawal, opiate replacement therapy and psychiatric management. Referral can be made by community GPs for specialist advice. Sessional GPs with specialist training in the prescribing of opiate replacement therapies treat people with opiate dependence with methadone, buprenorphine or suboxone. Clients are referred to outreach workers, withdrawal nurses, allied health and dual diagnosis specialists (mental health and substance use) for further assessment and support.
