Methadone is a controlled medicine which can be used for the treatment of heroin or opiate addiction. Methadone prevents the withdrawal symptoms of heroin, morphine or opium for 24 to 36 hours. It usually does not produce euphoria, is not associated with any serious side effects and enables the patients to work and lead a normal life as a productive citizen of the community. Established in 1972, the Methadone Treatment Programme is run by the Department of Health. The aim of the programme is to provide drug abusers with outpatient methadone maintenance treatment, so as to minimize the damage caused by dangerous drugs to the health of the abusers and to the economy and security of the society as a whole.
