Hope House Recovery Return to Fresh Start

Hope House, Inc was started in 1988 based upon a dream that Carrie Houk had one night She shared her dream with my husband and I when we were 6 months clean/sober Having a desire to give back what was given to us, we (as a team) made flyers asking for donations to help other addicts/alcoholics in their struggle to recover from substance abuse We began getting calls to pick up items such as clothes, furniture, refrigerators, etc, and we went to Broad Acres Swap Meet where the owner (Jake) made arrangements for us to pay half for a station to sell our donationsAfter a few months Carrie and her husband stopped helping us, but my husband, a friend named Thomas; as well as myself, continued selling donations and obtained enough money to buy a vanWe later took over an existing transitional living facility located at 3028 Vegas Drive which was operated by Ed Bolan of Shared Reality The dream was finally made a reality through the grace of God, prayer, and a lot of hard work Matter of fact, when Carrie first saw the house (I'll never forget the look on her face) she smiled with tears in her eyes and said this is the house, this is the house that was in my dream; this is the back yard, the barbecue grill and allThis particular house held from 8-10 men and was managed by a recovering alcoholic by the name of Riley (who died due to this insidious disease)We became incorporated in September of 1988 and obtained our tax exempt status in 1989 Our Mission then and still is to provide, to the best of Hope House's ability, love, care, material and human support for the adults that want to recover from alcohol and/or drug abuseWe immediately started a cleaning business to assist the men in paying their rent ($9100 per week) and we supplied three meals a day After two years we had to close the cleaning business due to our inability to pay taxes owed We became involved with Social Services who paid those individuals rent that had no job for the first month but they had to qualifyIn 1992 we rented another house located at 3016 Vegas Drive which held 8-10 menIn 1994 we took over the operation of a recovery club which allowed our residents to have access to socialization (there was a refreshment counter, pool tables/games; as well as, one big meeting room for 12 step meetings)Our financial situation got worse throughout the years due to the fact that we apparently didn't put God first (seeking direction from man rather than asking for guidance and wisdom from God)Men were leaving and not paying their rent because the landlord for 3028 was not making adequate repairs on the property, and the fact that my husband and I worked full-time jobs; not being able to give full attention to Hope House's needsMy husband and I borrowed money, had various fundraisers, asked for more donations, as well as financial assistance from different individuals, even gave up part of our pay in an attempt to keep all three facilities operatingDue to lack of financial support, we got further and further behind on the rent at 3028 Vegas Drive and was forced to close in 1997 We also had to stop serving food at 3016 Vegas DriveOur rent was raised on the recovery club, so we moved to 1401 N Decatur, Suite #2 & 3 We lost a lot of our renters but kept going regardless One year later we had no other alternative but to downsize (got rid of Suite #2 and kept #3 - having a meeting room only)Some years ago I (Melba L McGee) was led (after being laid off for the 3rd time) by God to devote my life to Him and Hope House; we were led to go back and purchase 3028 Vegas Drive and we opened our first women's home on Novembe 1, 1999In 2004 we had a fire in our women's home which forced us to sell all 3 of our properties (3016, 3028 Vegas Drive and our personal home which was located at 2116 Helen Avenue We became homeless for over 1 year and purchased 2500 Apricot Lane in 2005 where we all currently liveWe have kept this dream alive due to our dedication to a cause which we firmly believe in (drug/alcohol treatment)Hope House has assisted hundreds of men and women seeking recovery and has also led the way for other transitional living houses in Las Vegas by selflessly sharing our experienceWe thank God and everyone who has helped along the way!!!
