In 1962, while still a medical student in Des Moines, Iowa, Dr Keith was asked by his best friend to help an alcoholic get help There were no treatment programs in Iowa at that time and hospitals did not want to deal with alcoholics He knew nothing about alcoholism But he had taken, and believed in, the Hippocratic Oath especially the part that states, I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required And so began his life-long passion of treating the person and family with alcohol and other drug dependenceOver the course of the last 50 years, Dr Keith has become a leading expert in the field of addiction He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine, the highest board certification awarded to physicians in the field of addiction He has served on numerous Boards including the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency in New York, where he served for 21 years, with three years as Vice President and three years as President He pioneered many treatment programs across the country and was instrumental in getting insurance companies to cover the cost of addiction treatment He has authored many articles and papers on various aspects of addiction and has taught thousands of people about the disease of addiction, including physicians, dentists, nurses, counselors and business leaders A copy of his full Curriculum Vitae is available by request from The Latino Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services
