Our lives were changed forever by the challenge faced by one of every three Americans: how to provide the greatest hope and chance for recovery for a friend or family member struggling with substance abuse. People whose loved ones are in need of such help are expected to become instant experts in overcoming substance abuse, all while facing the urgent reality that another person’s life could be dependent on choices and decisions made on their behalf. While we were striving to help a family friend, we tried all of the traditional approaches. Even so, our friend passed away during a relapse. As we reflected on our efforts, we recognized that thousands of families deal with this challenge every day, and we realized that we have been blessed with the time and the treasure to enable us to help others in their search for hope.
